Squadding

Overview

Target Score's squadding system is designed to provide a logical and efficient way to pair participants for shooting events. Unlike random squadding, it incorporates intelligent rules to enhance the experience. For example:

  • Avoid pairing the same shooters together repeatedly, if possible.
  • Separate divisions onto different relays.
  • Assign left-handed shooters to the right side.
  • Rotate shooters across the range as the day progresses.

Note: This squadding system is optimized for Pair Firing style shooting. If it does not meet your requirements, please contact us to share your needs so we can improve the system.

Getting Started with Squadding

To create a squadding, navigate to Manage Event and select Squadding. Follow these steps:

Step 1: Configure Settings

  1. Enter Range Details:
  • Total Targets: Specify the total number of targets at the range.
  • Targets in Use: Indicate how many targets will be actively used (e.g., reserve one or two for backups).
  • Starting Target Number: Override the starting target number if some targets are unavailable. For example, if targets 1–3 are out of order, set this to 4.

Based on these inputs, Target Score calculates the number of relays required per match. By default, it assigns up to 3 shooters per target to minimize relays. Adjust this number (e.g., to 2 shooters per target) to update the relay count.

  1. Relay Grouping Options:
  • Choose the type of relay grouping you prefer. Each option includes a description to guide your selection.
  1. Shooter Movement:
  • Specify how far shooters should move across the range between matches.
  1. Handedness:
  • Decide whether to assign left-handed shooters to the right side or ignore handedness during squadding.
  1. Save Settings:
  • Once all options are configured, click Save Settings.

Important: Settings cannot be edited after squadding is generated unless all existing squaddings are deleted. This ensures consistency, as each squadding depends on the previous ones.

Step 2: Assign Targets and Divisions

  • Drag and drop targets and division combinations as needed.
  • Click Save Target Assignment when finished.

Step 3: Generate and Manage Squadding

  • Target Score generates one match at a time. If any issues are detected, you will be redirected to a page where you can manually adjust the squadding using drag-and-drop functionality. Save your changes when done.
  • The shooters per target and relays in your settings are the range's capacity. When you generate a match with Sequence, Complete Random or Random Switch Relay, Target Score asks how many shooters per target and how many relays this match uses (up to that capacity), suggests what the previous match used, and tells you how many firing points that gives your field before you confirm. Random in Relay and Clone Previous reuse the previous match's firing points, so they do not ask.
  • If no issues are found, a list of options will be displayed for managing the squadding.

Seed Squadding (finals)

For the final of a championship shot in stages, ICFRA allows a seeded squadding: competitors are ranked on their results so far and the leaders shoot together, in the middle of the range, under the same conditions. Click Seed by results on the Squadding page to build one for the next match.

How shooters are placed. The top shooter takes the centre target, the 2nd the target to its right, the 3rd the target to its left, and so on outward. With two shooters per target the leader takes the centre target's Left position, the 2nd its Right, the 3rd the Right position of the target on the left, the 4th the Left position of the target on the right. With three per target: centre Middle, then centre Right, then centre Left.

Building the layout. A seeded squadding is made of one or more runs; each run places one or more divisions onto one relay:

  • Rank by — the match or aggregate to rank on. The Grand Aggregate is preselected; the most recent match, a day aggregate or one of your own prize lists can be chosen instead.
  • Divisions — tick the divisions this run seeds. Rankings are per division, so each ticked division is kept together: it is ranked on its own and seeded from the centre of its own block of targets, the blocks side by side across the range in proportion to their numbers. Tick F-TR and F-Open, for example, and F-TR takes targets 1–5 and F-Open 6–10.
  • Relay and Targets — the relay and the part of the range this run fills.
  • Shooters per target for this run — a final is often shot in pairs or singles on a range set up for three. You can use fewer positions than your settings, never more.
  • Top N only — keep the best N places (for example the top 20 of the Grand). Shooters the countback cannot separate from the last place are all kept.
  • Also place shooters without a score — anyone in the group who has no score in the chosen source is placed after the seeded field, in entry-number order. Untick it to leave them out.

Click Add run, check the preview grid, and add further runs for other divisions (the dialog offers the next relay for you). Add one run per division does the common layout in one click: the largest division alone in the first relay, the next division in the next relay, and when relays run out the remaining divisions share the last relay, each in its own block — for example Relay 1: TR; Relay 2: F-Open and F-TR side by side. Nothing is saved until you click Save.

Good to know.

  • A run never moves shooters to another relay on its own. If they do not all fit, the dialog says how many are left over: use more shooters per target, add a run on another relay (it seeds the leftovers from that relay's centre), or save and seat them by hand on the Adjust screen, where they are listed as unassigned.
  • With handedness set to right side, a left-hander swaps with the partner on their own target only, so the seeding is kept. The left-handers together option is not applied to a seeded squadding.
  • Scores are re-read every time you open the dialog, so a result entered a moment ago counts.
