Target Score v4 is now live

Founder, Target Score

Hi everyone,

Target Score v4 is now live.

We started Target Score in 2022 with a fairly simple goal: make it easier for shooting clubs to run events, manage entries, and publish results without having to deal with complicated software.

A lot has changed since then. With v4, Target Score is now faster, more secure, and has a much broader set of tools for clubs and shooters.

This is a major release, and I wanted to share some of the bigger changes with you.

What's new

1. Electronic Waivers & Signatures

Target Score can now automatically send waivers to participants for electronic signature and keep the signed record with the participant. The signing process includes an audit trail.

  • Build a waiver once under Manage Club > Waivers, then attach it to any event. Each waiver can apply to everyone, to members only, or to non-members only (membership comes from your Team Up Mate integration).
  • The signing link goes out automatically as soon as an entry is pending or approved. Entries paid by card get theirs after the payment clears, never before. Reminders are sent to anyone who has not signed yet.
  • The participants list shows who has signed, who is still waiting, and whose email bounced. The signed copy and its audit trail can be downloaded per participant, or exported as a ZIP for the whole event or club.
  • If someone withdraws, their unsigned waivers are voided. Signed waivers are always kept as evidence.

2. Pricing Tiers

You no longer need to create separate price options in the Form Builder. Create pricing tiers directly for an event, including taxes and limited-time discounted entry prices.

  • Every event has one or more tiers with a default. Give a tier an "available from" and "available until" window and you have early-bird pricing, for example Early Bird $75 until June 1 and Regular $85 from June 1.
  • Define a tax once for the club and attach it to any tier, so the entry form and the invoice show it as a separate line.
  • Shooters only see the tiers that are open right now, with a badge for tiers that expire soon. The price is locked when the order is created, and a form left open past a deadline is asked to refresh instead of paying the old price.
  • Optional extras (dinners, T-shirts, extra matches) live on the new Add-ons page.

3. Event Accounting & Invoices

Target Score now generates invoices for payments, giving clubs the ability to keep their event accounting in the same system.

  • Every registration creates an order with line items: the tier, taxes, add-ons, the card processing fee (if you pass it on) and any donation. Invoices and receipts are numbered in sequence.
  • Participants get a link to their invoice in the registration and payment emails, and every order they have ever placed is listed on their new My Orders page.
  • The Accounting page on the Event Dashboard shows gross, tax, fees, collected, outstanding and net, broken down by tier and add-on. You can record cash and e-transfer payments, record or issue refunds (including Stripe refunds), and email an invoice from the same place.

Read more: Accounting & Invoices and, for shooters, Your Orders & Invoices.

4. Improved Dashboard & Club Subscriptions

Star (subscribe to) clubs you want to follow. Your starred clubs sort to the top of every club list and their upcoming events appear on your dashboard.

  • The signed-in dashboard is now personal. Shooters see the upcoming events of the clubs they follow and a snapshot of their best scores. Club owners and managers also get a revenue snapshot for the event they pick.
  • Starred clubs are saved to your account, so they follow you from device to device.
  • To hear about new events and results by email, tick the newsletter box on your profile page. It is opt-in and every email carries an unsubscribe link.

5. Shooter Analytics

Shooters can now see their shooting history and statistics, including total events, best scores by distance, shot count, long-range results, range, and more.

  • The Analytics page opens with your totals: events, matches, distances shot and shot counts.
  • Quick views cover Best Scores by Distance, Best Scores by Shot Count, Long Range Performance (900 and 1000), Performance by Range and a detailed distance-by-shot-count breakdown, and you can narrow them by rule book and target face.
  • Open any best score to see the target view with the shot plot, where the club recorded one.
  • Your privacy switches decide whether other people can see your shot and load data. You always see your own.

6. Combined Results

Support for common U.S. combined-results formats has been added.

  • Combined Results is the awards sheet you read out at prize-giving: every shooter grouped by division and then by classification, with the awards printed beside each score (*MW for the match winner, *1HM, *2HM for class places, *1Sr or *1Mil for categories).
  • Generate it from your scores, correct any remark by hand, save it as a draft and publish when you are happy. Visitors see the published sheet at the top of your results as Final Results & Awards.
  • This one is in beta. If a total or an award looks wrong, please tell us which event and what you expected.

7. Import Scores from CSV/Excel

ShotMarker imports were already supported. You can now also import scores using CSV or Excel-compatible files.

  • Download a spreadsheet template for the event, fill it in, and drop it on the Import Scores page. One row per shooter, or one row per shooter per match with shot-by-shot values, both work.
  • Shooters are matched by Target Score ID, then entry number, then email, then name. Anything ambiguous is shown to you for confirmation, never guessed.
  • If a shooter in the file is not entered in the event yet, you can add them without leaving the import.

8. Club Records

When a shooter beats a club record, Target Score automatically flags the score on the results page as an unconfirmed record and lists it under Manage Club > Records for the club to review and make official. A score that ties a record is badged as well.

  • A record is kept per distance, unit, shot count and division, with the current holder and the full history of past holders.
  • A pending record never changes anything on its own. A club manager approves it (the new holder takes over and the previous holder moves to the history) or rejects it, and a rejected score is never flagged again.
  • The club's records page shows only verified records.

9. History of Changes

The new Activity history shows changes made to participants. For example, you can see when another club manager approved a candidate.

  • Every entry has a timeline: status changes, edits with the old and new value, notes, payments and refunds, withdrawals, waitlist invitations and waiver events.
  • Each line names who did it, whether a participant, a named organizer or the system.
  • The timeline is only visible to organizers and cannot be edited.

10. Draft Events

Not ready to publish an event yet? Save it as a draft and come back to it later.

  • An event is now Draft, Private or Published. Only your club's owners and managers can see a draft. A private event is unlisted but reachable by its link.
  • A draft already has its final address, so nothing changes for anyone when you publish. Cloned events start as drafts.

Read more: Create an Event.

11. Custom Event & Club URLs

Clubs and events can now use readable URLs instead of the randomly generated IDs used previously.

  • When you create an event, Target Score suggests an address from the event name and checks that it is free. You can change it before you publish.
  • Old links keep working. Anything you have already shared, printed or put on your website still opens the right page.

12. Simpler Events by Default

Events now start with the basic information most clubs need. You can switch to a Full Event when you need the more advanced event features. For simple events, Target Score can effectively work as your club's event calendar.

  • A simple event is a name, dates, a description, a venue and an optional discipline, contact and entry fee for information. No entries, no scores.
  • Click Set up a full event at any time and it is upgraded in place, with everything you typed carried over and the fee becoming the default pricing tier.

13. WordPress Calendar Integration

You can now display Target Score events directly on your club website using the new WordPress plugin or embed code.

  • Install the TargetScore Events Calendar plugin, enter your Club ID and you get a month calendar, a list view, in-site event pages with a Register button, and an Upcoming Events widget for your sidebar. Colours follow your club's disciplines.
  • No WordPress? The Club Calendar page gives you an embed code for any website.

Also new in v4

  • Sign in your way. Email and password, a sign-in link sent to your inbox, or Facebook.
  • Email preferences. Choose which kinds of email you receive, opt out of a single event, or unsubscribe with one click. Receipts and confirmations are always sent.
  • Waitlist. Invitations from the waitlist are now time-limited and hold the spot while the shooter decides. Shooters accept or decline from the email without signing in, and you can let Target Score invite the next person automatically.
  • Clone an event. Pick what to copy (matches, prize lists, entry form, pricing tiers, add-ons) and the dates shift for you.
  • Event Dashboard. Every event now has one page that gathers setup, participants, scoring and accounting.
  • Entry notifications. Choose who is told about new entries: the contact email, all managers, a custom list, or nobody.
  • Sharing. Event links now come with a preview image when pasted into social media and messaging apps.

Some important changes

Participant entry from the Admin Portal Adding a participant from the Admin Portal now takes them through the full custom entry form rather than immediately approving the entry. You choose how the entry is paid, including a no-charge comp entry, and you get the invoice and payment link straight away. See Add Participant.

Club-managed Disciplines & Divisions Each club now manages its own Categories, Disciplines, and Divisions. Previously, some of these settings were managed at the event level. This change gives clubs more flexibility because clubs often organize their events differently. Disciplines also colour your calendar and the WordPress plugin, and each event can leave out the divisions, categories and payment gateways that do not apply to it. See Club Divisions and Classifications & Categories.

A new Form Builder Event entry forms now start blank. Each event builds its own form from text, checkbox, choice, date, heading and rich-text fields, dragged into the order you want. If you want to use Target Score's standard fields, you can simply add them to the form. A live preview sits beside the builder, and you can still copy a form from another of your events. See Custom Entry Forms.

Results page Result aggregations are now displayed as tiles instead of a dropdown. Target Score creates the Grand, per-day and per-match aggregates for you, and you can feature as many as you like at the top. Events will also no longer appear on the results page until results have actually been entered. See Prize List (Aggregates).

Paid plans Target Score stays free for what it has always done. A few resource-intensive features, starting with electronic signatures, come with a free allowance and a Pro plan for clubs that need more. See Plans & Billing.

There are many other smaller improvements and bug fixes throughout the application.

We need your help

Target Score is a not-for-profit project, and v4 is a significant change to the application.

We don't have the resources for a large testing team, so your feedback is extremely valuable.

If you run into a bug, something doesn't behave as expected, or you simply find something confusing, please reply to this email or contact:

support@targetscore.com

Please don't assume that someone else has already reported it. Your report may be the first one we receive, and it helps us make Target Score better for everyone.

The documentation is also being updated and will continue to be expanded over the coming winter.

Keeping Target Score running

Target Score is operated as a not-for-profit project. The infrastructure and services required to run it currently cost about $120/month, before accounting for development and maintenance time.

If Target Score has been useful to your club or your shooting, please consider supporting the project with a donation:

Donate to Target Score

As the user base grows, we may also need to place limits on some resource-intensive features or introduce additional charges for certain advanced usage. The goal is to keep the core platform accessible while making sure the project can continue to operate.

Thank you to everyone who has used Target Score, reported issues, suggested improvements, and helped us get from the original 2022 version to v4.

There is still work to do, but this release is a big step forward.

Thank you,
